About The Kraken

The Kraken is a rare surviving true Roadhouse Bar and music venue.  It's the latest and greatest reincarnation of a local gathering space that started out in the 1940's as a garage and food stand on what was originally a dirt road between Chapel Hill and Greensboro.  It's located at the intersection of NC Highway 54 West and Dodson Crossroads, just a few miles west of downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill and just a few miles east of scenic Saxapahaw.  We're easily accessible from both the Triangle and the Triad, and surprisingly convenient to further NC hotbeds of talent such as Asheville, Boone, Greenville, and Wilmington.

The venue has been a bar in recent decades, under such names such as The Lil' Bar, Booger's, and Catahoula's, but all of those pale to the current, friendly and rocking venue to which our friend Eric donated his heart and soul.  He birthed The Kraken in 2009, and entrusted Jody and Kirk to nourish and grow the bar just after its 5th year anniversary, and we've done our best to make incremental improvements since then with the generous assistance.  We are proud to provide a neighborhood living room and great porches where all are welcome. We are a safe space!

You will find the same friendly Kraken staff, the best front porch in town, free pool and darts, great bands on the weekends and other special nights (no cover charges) and everything else you've grown to love about The Kraken.  Every first and third Tuesday, we have a great group of folks who come out for an Old-Time Stringband Jam and they draw folks from across the country.  On every second Thursday, DJ Brian Burns and occasional guest DJs spin a unique selection of great country, soul and rock music.  We have occasionally host Pool Tournaments, and due to popular request, are hoping to bring back Karaoke or Trivia Nights. Great times whether you are participating or just looking on.

Stop by and meet interesting characters and exchange your funniest and wildest stories on the best porch in the Triangle... hook up with solid wifi, soak up cozy A/C and heat, dance to fine music, and have an all-round great time!  If you're one of the thousands of people who pass by The Kraken every day on the way to or from work, just pop in for a moment and get out of the frustrating traffic on Highway 54.  We simply ask you to enjoy yourself, and tip the bartenders and bands generously!

We're open seven days a week, starting at 3pm.  On slow nights during the week, we may close earlier than our regular 2am cutoff.  We will gauge attendance by 10pm to Midnight on weekdays, depending on the weather and time of year.

If you've left something behind at the bar, we do maintain a lost and found box and we keep all small items of value behind the bar with a note approximating what day/time it was left.  When such items as clothing and umbrellas and hats build up over many months, we may donate the older items to the PTA thrift store.  If you've left your credit card at the bar at the end of the night or are asked to leave, we typically ring up your tab and add a maximum %20 gratuity.  We hold your card and receipt behind the bar.
